A fitting welcome at Pósthús: Stairway to Food Heaven

Incredible steak, killer pizza and elevated Indian food—Reykjavík’s food halls gave us plenty to get excited about. We found beautiful spaces where we could enjoy a meal together, with our toddler warmly welcomed along the way.

01

Pósthús Food Hall & Bar: one of our favorites

Pósthús was one of our favorite food halls in Reykjavík. Housed in the former post office, it’s a huge building with lots of different rooms to explore. Patterned tiles, cozy seating and a pink blossom tree beside the tables made it such a cute setting for a meal.

The food options were wonderful. We tried elevated Indian food and pizza from Pizza Popolare, and the pizza was a highlight. This is a place I’d happily return to, both for the food and the atmosphere.

02

Hlemmur Mathöll: worth the walk—and a second visit

This was my second visit to Hlemmur Mathöll. It sits on the edge of the main tourist area, a short walk farther and well worth it.

Everything is gathered in one big room. It has a different feel from the many rooms at Pósthús, with the food counters and seating sharing one space.

We tried Flatey Pizza here. If you’re wondering whether to choose Flatey or Pizza Popolare at Pósthús, both were good. Try both and decide which is your favorite—that’s a pretty enjoyable comparison to make.

Hafnartorg Gallery: incredible steak and a luxe, relaxed vibe

Hafnartorg had a beautiful atmosphere: warm lighting, sleek counters and a luxurious feel that was also relaxed. It had the energy of somewhere you could enjoy a fun evening out, and our family felt warmly welcomed with our toddler along.

The steak was incredible—a standout from our meal. Our table filled up with different dishes, which is part of the appeal of a food hall: everyone can choose what sounds good and still eat together.

For anyone exploring Reykjavík by car, the huge underground parking garage is another plus.

Where I’d go back

Pósthús was one of our favorites for its wonderful options and charming setting. Hlemmur earned a second visit, and Hafnartorg’s steak and beautiful atmosphere gave us plenty of reason to return.

I’d happily include food halls in another Reykjavík trip. You can make room for a really good meal without needing everyone at the table to want the same thing.

A well-located hotel makes this kind of Reykjavík exploring much easier. If you are looking for a more elevated stay to pair with the city’s dining scene, the luxury-resort collection below is a useful place to begin comparing options.

JENI’S VERDICT

Pósthús for the charming rooms and pizza, Hlemmur for a return visit, and Hafnartorg for incredible steak in a beautiful setting. All three earned a place in our Reykjavík food memories.
