DENMARK · A FAMILY CITY BREAK

Copenhagen before a cruise:
worth arriving early for

Our short family stay in Copenhagen: Villa Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens, excellent food and exploring the city with a toddler before our Baltic cruise.

A little time to wander before the cruise began

A rooftop pool, Danish sandwiches piled high and a visit to Tivoli—Copenhagen gave us plenty to love before we even boarded our cruise. We had a day and a half to explore with family and our toddler. Here’s where we stayed, what we ate and what I’d make time for before setting sail.

01

A short stay that felt like part of the vacation

We arrived in the morning and had the rest of that day, followed by part of the next, before heading to the port. With several adults and a toddler, I wanted time to enjoy Copenhagen without turning our first stop into an endurance event.

The things I remember most are a mix of the obvious and the everyday: Tivoli, a really good hotel breakfast, the food hall, little shops and all the life happening on the streets around us. That balance made the visit feel satisfying even with limited time.

If you are wondering whether Copenhagen is worth arriving early for before a cruise, my answer is yes. Our brief visit gave us a lovely introduction. I would happily give it more time on a return trip.

02

Villa Copenhagen made a lovely base

We stayed at Villa Copenhagen, kitty-corner from Tivoli Gardens. That location worked beautifully for the kind of visit we had: a short stay, family traveling together and a lot of exploring on foot. Having Tivoli and the food hall so close kept a big part of our plan simple.

I look for a great breakfast, a pool worth spending time in and a location that makes it easy to explore on foot. Villa Copenhagen delivered on all three. We didn’t rent a car; we walked around the city and relied on taxis and a prebooked car service for other journeys.

I would happily stay here again—with more time to enjoy that pool.

03

Tivoli belongs in the plan

Tivoli Gardens was one of the highlights of our time in Copenhagen. Having it so close to the hotel made it an easy choice, and it gave our family a shared outing within a short city stay.

Our family photo by the fountain, with the carousel behind us, captures that part of the trip perfectly. It is a place I am glad we made time for, even though we had a ship to catch the next day.

When planning your own visit, decide how much your group wants to focus on the rides. Tivoli sells garden entrance and ride access separately, as well as together in a package. Check its opening calendar for your dates and the requirements for any rides you have in mind for younger children.

04

Tivoli Food Hall was a win for the whole group

The food at Tivoli Food Hall was excellent. We tried traditional Danish open-faced sandwiches, smørrebrød, and also had sushi and pasta. With extended family traveling together, having that variety in one place was incredibly convenient.

I like being able to try something local while leaving room for everyone to choose what sounds good to them. A food hall makes that easy. You can be interested in Danish food and also have someone in the group who would be perfectly happy with pasta.

This would be an easy repeat for me on another Copenhagen visit, especially with family. It worked well as a meal that did not require the entire day to revolve around a restaurant reservation.

05

Exploring Copenhagen on foot

We walked around the royal palace area and browsed some of the small shops nearby. I loved having time for that sort of exploring: looking at the buildings, following our curiosity and letting the walk be part of the experience.

The city felt lively with people walking and cycling. Bikes were everywhere, including cargo bikes carrying passengers. Seeing adults riding along in them caught my attention, too. That everyday movement is one of the things that stayed with me about Copenhagen.

For our visit, walking with the stroller worked well. That is my experience of the routes we took, rather than a promise about every street in the city. Comfortable shoes, a stroller you enjoy pushing and enough flexibility to stop are what I would bring again.

How I would plan a similar short stay

I would keep the plan focused on a few things we really enjoyed and allow the timing to follow the family’s energy. This is the shape I would use for another brief visit, rather than a minute-by-minute reconstruction of ours.

  • Choose a central hotel. For us, being near Tivoli and the food hall made several decisions easier at once.
  • Give Tivoli a proper block of time. Check opening dates and ticket options before building the rest of the day around it.
  • Leave room for a city walk. The palace area and little shops were a lovely part of our visit; I would avoid filling every hour with reservations.
  • Keep one meal flexible. Tivoli Food Hall worked especially well for our group’s different tastes.
  • Protect the departure morning. Enjoy breakfast and allow ample time for the correct cruise terminal and your assigned boarding window before adding more sightseeing.

Planning a Copenhagen trip in fall

Our family visit was in June, but Copenhagen is easy to imagine in a cooler season too. For fall, I’d plan on layers, walkable shoes and a coat that works for long city strolls. I made a separate packing guide with outfit ideas and a shoppable collage for a fall visit.

A taste of Copenhagen before your cruise

If you’re overnighting before a cruise, you can get a lovely taste of Copenhagen. We enjoyed what we were able to see during our short stay, but an extra couple of days would have been very welcome.

JENI’S VERDICT

Villa Copenhagen, Tivoli, excellent food and time to wander made this a lovely start to our family trip. I would do it again—and give Copenhagen another couple of days. We left wanting more time there, which is a pretty good reason to return.
